Unzipped: Alexia Brue
The Well + Good NYC co-founder unpacks her summer workout essentials.

If you run a fitness, beauty and wellness website, in a way, your gym bag is kind of like your briefcase. So Alexia Brue, who co-founded Well + Good NYC with business partner Melisse Gelula, always keeps hers stocked with a carefully curated array of gear and products to meet the needs of any day and any workout. "We love how NYC turns into a giant playground from May to September," she says. "Piers become Pilates studios; parks host yoga and fitness classes." Which, of course, present Brue with different challenges than when she strolls into Equinox. "Outdoor classes require thinking like a Girl Scout/Outward Bound camper — i.e. there are no convenient Kiehl’s amenites." Here, Brue shares the essentials she keeps on hand for summer workouts in the city:
1 Alexander Wang Alpha Shopper
"I'm using this as my gym bag this summer. It doesn't have a ton of compartments for organizing, but I can never remember where I put things even when I am using a bag with lots of compartments! The important thing is that it's roomy enough for both my computer and gym apparel."

2 Nona Varnado Hair Scarf
"Working out in the sun and humidity can lead to serious shvitzing, so I love tying this scarf around my hairline and using it like a headband. And Nona Varnado is a hometown gal who makes all her clothes and accessories in Brooklyn."

3 Manduka's eKO Lite Mat
"This is definitely not the cushiest, springiest of mats but it literally folds up to the size of a magazine and weighs only 3.5 pounds. So I can stick it in my bag rather than having to deal with a bulky rolled up yoga mat."

4 Nike Racquette Slice High Tops
"I'm obsessed with these. Sadly I can't actually wear them to work out in but I can wear them to yoga or Figure 4. They're like padded slippers — so comfortable. I get a ton of compliments on them."

5 Nux Tank
"This has compression and is super flattering — the fitness version of the little black dress. It's great to pair with crazy pants, like the Phat Buddha ones or another favorite pair of leggings I have from Hard Tail."

6 Phat Buddha Reade Legging
"Lately, I've been rocking these cobalt blue glitter yoga pants. Well + Good hosts frequent nighttime fitness events and I like to wear something that puts me in a party mood."

7 John Masters Natural Mineral Sunscreen
"This is step one of my sunscreen routine. I love that it’s natural and uses titanium and zinc oxide, plus it feels like a skincare product because it has green tea and shea butter."

8 Marie Veronique Organics Everyday Sheer Coverage
"Step two of my screen routine (I burn easily) is this tinted moisturizer with SPF from a California-based company that I’m newly in love with. It evens out my skin tone and leaves a matte finish so I don’t need powder. The medium tinted one makes me look like I have a summer tan going (which I so don’t)."

9 Herban Essentials Lemon Towelettes
"I use these to clean my face, hands, and mat (in that order!) after class."

10 Velojoy Water Bottle
"I love this clear water bottle that my friend Susi Wunsch made for her website Velojoy.com. She’s a city cycling advocate, and journalist, so when I use this bottle I think of how bike friendly and liveable this city has become."
