Peter Som

Q&A with Peter Som

The designer on kale, Valley of the Dolls and what puts a spring in his step.

Peter Som is a mainstay in the fashion industry, known for bold prints and elegant, offbeat designs that have graced the pages of Vogue and the bodies of movie stars since his eponymous line launched in 2001. The San Francisco native, who debuts his Spring 2013 collection at New York fashion week today, recently concluded a five season consulting role at Tommy Hilfiger, where he helped resurrect the women's runway collection. Which begs the question: What's next? As the fashion world wonders, Som, an Equinox devotee, now has plenty of time to hit up his favorite group fitness class.

Typical workout:
Violet Zaki’s Zen Combat class and training with Jaime Morales.

What we'd be surprised to find in his fridge:
Lots of Lacinato kale.

Ultimate healthy meal:
Café Cluny’s beet salad and tuna burger without the bun. Or a salad of the aforementioned kale at home.

Ultimate decadent meal:
So many! Good Restaurant’s Mac and Cheese, Isodi’s Pasta Cacio e Pepe..the list is long!

Latest obsession:
The t-shirts at Saturdays Surf.

What he's totally over:
Bad attitudes. Well I’m guess I’m always over that.

Wardrobe item he can’t live without:
My Moscot glasses. I could live without them but things would be very blurry.

Inspiring his designs right now:
In no particular order: Valley of the Dolls, Giovanna Battaglia, orchids and Cindy Sherman.

Favorite part of Fashion Week:
My show!

Least favorite part of Fashion Week:
The crowds!

Best gift he's ever received:
My most favorite are usually gift certificates to fabulous spas. I never have time so it’s good to get a wonderful reminder!

Art or photography hanging in his house:
An eclectic mix — Glenn Ligon, Gary Simmons, Anthony Goicolea, Lisa Ruyter, Jose Dávila. Mostly contemporary artists.

What completely relaxes him:
A good bath. And a shoulder rub.

Books on his bedside table:
Philistines at the Hedgerow by Steven Gaines, re-reading Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World and The Andy Warhol Diaries.

Where he feels most at home:
I feel most at home — at home! Especially in my kitchen when I’m cooking.

Best vacation he's ever taken:
Mallorca with good friends.

Biggest vice:
Fresh sourdough boule with butter and Maldon sea salt. I can eat the entire thing. In minutes.

Style icons:
Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Lapo Elkann and Ryan Gosling.

Two things still on his bucket list:
Going on a safari and having my own garden

Number one reason for taking care of his body:
I feel better and have a bounce in my step. And my waistband isn’t tight.

Message he'd send out to the world with one request (Only catch: It has to be 140 characters or less):
Kindness, humor, humility, wit; and always remember to breathe in, and breathe out.
