Q&A with Peter Som
The designer on kale, Valley of the Dolls and what puts a spring in his step.
Friday, September 07, 2012 | Q Editors
Violet Zaki’s Zen Combat class and training with Jaime Morales.
What we'd be surprised to find in his fridge:
Lots of Lacinato kale.
Café Cluny’s beet salad and tuna burger without the bun. Or a salad of the aforementioned kale at home.
So many! Good Restaurant’s Mac and Cheese, Isodi’s Pasta Cacio e Pepe..the list is long!
The t-shirts at Saturdays Surf.
Bad attitudes. Well I’m guess I’m always over that.
My Moscot glasses. I could live without them but things would be very blurry.
In no particular order: Valley of the Dolls, Giovanna Battaglia, orchids and Cindy Sherman.
Looks from Peter Som RTW Fall 2012.
Favorite part of Fashion Week:
My show!
Least favorite part of Fashion Week:
The crowds!
Best gift he's ever received:
My most favorite are usually gift certificates to fabulous spas. I never have time so it’s good to get a wonderful reminder!
Art or photography hanging in his house:
An eclectic mix — Glenn Ligon, Gary Simmons, Anthony Goicolea, Lisa Ruyter, Jose Dávila. Mostly contemporary artists.
What completely relaxes him:
A good bath. And a shoulder rub.
Books on his bedside table:
Philistines at the Hedgerow by Steven Gaines, re-reading Michael Cunningham’s A Home at the End of the World and The Andy Warhol Diaries.
Where he feels most at home:
I feel most at home — at home! Especially in my kitchen when I’m cooking.
Best vacation he's ever taken:
Mallorca with good friends.
Biggest vice:
Fresh sourdough boule with butter and Maldon sea salt. I can eat the entire thing. In minutes.
Style icons:
Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Lapo Elkann and Ryan Gosling.
Two things still on his bucket list:
Going on a safari and having my own garden.
Number one reason for taking care of his body:
I feel better and have a bounce in my step. And my waistband isn’t tight.
Message he'd send out to the world with one request (Only catch: It has to be 140 characters or less):
Kindness, humor, humility, wit; and always remember to breathe in, and breathe out.
